Homeowners Regularly Adding Programmable Setback Thermostats, American Consumer Opinion® Study Shows.
Arlington, Texas – More than a quarter of homeowners have added programmable setback thermostats since purchasing their homes, according to a major study by American Consumer Opinion®, a leading international marketing research and marketing consulting firm. The study also shows that fewer than one in 10 homeowners have added whole-house equipment.
In its recently completed American Home Comfort Study, American Consumer Opinion® found that 28 percent of homeowners have added programmable setback thermostats since purchasing their homes. Of those homeowners, 21 percent purchased the thermostats during the past 12 months, 22 percent during the past 13 to 24 months, and 57 percent during the past 25 months or more.
In terms of other ancillary equipment, 8 percent of homeowners have added roof ventilation fans, the survey shows.
Few homeowners are adding whole-house ventilation or humidity control equipment, the study shows. Only 5 percent of respondents said they have added whole-house attic fans to their homes; 3 percent said they have added whole-house/duct-mounted humidifiers; 1 percent have added whole-house dehumidifiers; and 0.4 percent have added heat/energy recovery ventilators.
Methodology
The American Home Comfort Study was conduct in July and August of 2004. It is based on a nationally representative sample of 1,481 homeowners who have replaced their HVAC equipment in the past 24 months. Respondents were recruited from American Consumer Opinion® online panel. The margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level is plus or minus 3 percent.
